MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Jim Doyle has signed into law a bill that will keep online public charter schools open.  The deal was reached by the Legislature and passed last month.

Changes were required after an appeals court ruled last year that the virtual schools were violating state laws on charter schools, teacher licensing and open enrollment.   The ruling threatened to close 12 schools that enroll 3,500 students. The students learn at home through classes offered over the Internet.

A central part of the bill signed Monday by Doyle forces schools to cap enrollment at 5,250.  Doyle reached the deal with Republican and Democratic legislative leaders.
