Court Rules Against Virtual Schools December 07, 2007 A ruling filed this week could put an end to the state's flourishing virtual schools movement. Virtual schools like the Wisconsin Virtual Academy, based in Ozaukee, use online curriculum to teach children from home. On Wednesday a District Appeals Court ruled that the Wisconsin Virtual Academy violated several statutes and should be denied state funding. The ruling could affect other virtual schools in the state. Among the laws violated are teacher certification statues because, with most virtual schools, students are taught by family members in the home. Lucy Brown, an attorney representing the Wisconsin Education Association Council, the state's largest teachers union, will be here to talk about why the ruling is a victory for teachers. Rose Fernandez, president of the Wisconsin Coalition of Virtual School Families, will also join us to talk about the decision.
